Brewster Destroys Golota

CHICAGO, IL - Before fans could get comfortable in their seats, it was time to go.

WBO heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster quickly finished off Andrew Golota by scoring a technical knockout 53 seconds into their scheduled 12-round bout at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Brewster knocked down Golota three times with wild left hooks. The first knockdown came 13 seconds into the bout.

Golota got to his feet groggily, but Brewster continued the pressure and knocked the Pole through the ropes.

The end came when Brewster, now 32-2 (28 KOs) connected with an assortment of punches, culminating with a deadly left hook that dropped Golota for good.

"I knew that Golota was made for me," said Brewster. "You can't stand in front of me. That's suicide."

The loss will end any chance of Golota fighting for a title in the near future for once again he wilted under the pressure in a big bout. Losing in this fashion may very well spell the end of Golota's career. Golota, 38-6-1 (31 KOs) suggested he would retire if unsuccessful.

Golota was fighting in his fourth title bout. The first was in 1997, when Lennox Lewis scored a first-round technical knockout. Most recently, Golota was coming off a controversial decision loss to WBA champion John Ruiz in November and a draw against IBF champ Chris Byrd seven months earlier.

Brewster was coming off a thrilling come-from-behind win against Wladamir Klitschko and a close controversial decision victory over Kali Meehan. However this victory tonight put no doubt in the minds of ringsiders that the Los Angeles resident is someone to keep an eye on.

"I wanted to show that I'm more than just tough, I'm more than just heart," said Brewster. "I've got skills."

And apparently a big punch as well. And in a heavyweight division needing resuscitation, power is always welcomed.

Undercard results

Tomasz Adamek W12 (Majority Decision) Paul Briggs – [WBC light heavyweight title]
Alejandro Garcia TKO9 Rhoshii Wells [WBA interim junior middleweight title]
Guillermo Jones TKO4 Kelvin Davis

Note: The Golota-Brewster fight was the first heavyweight championship bout in the Chicago area since Mike Weaver won the WBA title in a 15-round decision over James "Quick" Tillis at the Rosemont Horizon in October 1981.
